How much do braces cost in 2026?
Choosing braces can feel confusing, and for many families the biggest question is simple: how much will treatment cost? This guide explains the most common orthodontic treatment options in plain language, with estimated 2026 costs, plus what to know about insurance and Wisconsin Medicaid and BadgerCare Plus.
Full orthodontic treatment in the United States often costs several thousand dollars. The exact amount depends on the type of braces, how much correction is needed, how long treatment takes, and what is included in the treatment plan.
The prices listed for each option below are national estimates available in 2026 before insurance. They are provided as a general guide and do not represent iDental’s fees or a guaranteed quote. Call (262) 223-0280 for a personalized estimate.
Traditional metal braces
Average Cost: $2,500 to $10,000
Metal braces use small brackets and a wire that applies gentle pressure to move the teeth over time. They can treat a wide range of problems, from crowding and gaps to overbites, underbites, and more complex bite issues. They are durable, reliable, and often the most affordable choice, and kids often enjoy picking colored elastic bands. The trade-offs: they are the most noticeable option, food can get trapped around the brackets, and careful brushing matters.
Ceramic braces
Average Cost: $3,000 to $10,000
Ceramic braces work like metal braces, but the brackets are clear or tooth-colored, making them less noticeable in photos and everyday life. Because they are fixed to the teeth, there is nothing to remember to wear. They can cost slightly more than metal braces, the brackets are more fragile, and clear ties can discolor without good cleaning. They are a popular choice for teens and adults who want a subtler fixed option.
Self-ligating braces
Average Cost: $2,500 to $8,000
Self-ligating braces look similar to regular braces, but each bracket has a small built-in clip that holds the wire instead of elastic ties. Some patients find them easier to keep clean. They are still visible, may cost more than basic metal braces, and are not automatically faster or better for every patient.
Lingual braces
Average Cost: $5,000 to $13,000
Lingual braces attach to the back of the teeth, making them nearly invisible when you smile. They are usually the most expensive type, can be harder to clean, and may irritate the tongue or affect speech during the adjustment period. They also require special training and are not offered at every practice.
Clear aligners
Average Cost: $1,8000 to $8,000
Clear aligners are not technically braces. They are a series of removable clear trays that gradually move the teeth. They are hard to notice and come out for meals and brushing, but they must be worn about 22 hours a day, and they are not the best fit for every bite or for patients who may struggle to wear them consistently.
iDental currently offers traditional metal and ceramic braces. Clear aligners are planned, so please call for the latest information about availability.
Does insurance cover braces?
Some dental plans cover part of orthodontic treatment, especially for children, either as a percentage or a fixed lifetime benefit. Before starting, ask your insurer whether your plan includes orthodontic coverage, whether it applies to adults, what the lifetime maximum is, whether a waiting period applies, and whether ceramic braces or aligners count as optional upgrades.
Can Wisconsin Medicaid or BadgerCare Plus cover braces?
iDental accepts Wisconsin Medicaid and BadgerCare Plus. For eligible patients age 20 and under, medically necessary orthodontic treatment may be covered at no cost if the case meets program requirements and receives approval before treatment begins. Coverage is not automatic, and straightening teeth only for appearance usually does not qualify. Our team evaluates the bite, takes the required records, and submits the case for prior authorization. Benefits can change, so verify coverage before treatment.
