What Is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is a small post placed into the jawbone to replace the root of a missing tooth. As the area heals, the implant integrates with the surrounding bone and creates a stable foundation for a replacement tooth.
For a single missing tooth, the implant replaces the missing root and a custom crown is attached above it. When several or all teeth are missing, multiple implants can support a bridge or denture.
Depending on how many teeth you need to replace, an implant can support a:
Single dental crown
Implant-supported bridge
Removable implant-supported denture
Fixed full-arch restoration
Dental Implant Options at iDental
Missing one tooth?
A dental implant topped with a crown can replace both the visible tooth and its underlying root. Unlike a traditional tooth-supported bridge, an implant can replace the missing tooth without requiring the neighboring teeth to serve as supports.
Single-Tooth Dental Implant
If several neighboring teeth are missing, implants may be used to support multiple replacement teeth.
An implant-supported bridge can restore several teeth without requiring an individual implant underneath every replacement tooth. Your dentist will evaluate your bone, remaining teeth, and bite to determine the appropriate treatment.
Multiple-Tooth Implant
If traditional dentures feel loose or move while you eat or speak, dental implants can provide additional support and stability.
An implant-supported denture connects to implants placed in the jaw instead of relying solely on the gums for support. Depending on the treatment design, the denture may be removable by the patient or fixed in place.
iDental also has an on-site denture laboratory, allowing our clinical and laboratory teams to coordinate directly when creating and adjusting denture restorations.
Implant-Supported Dentures
For patients who are missing most or all of their teeth, a full arch of replacement teeth can be supported by several strategically positioned dental implants.
All-on-4 refers to a treatment approach in which four implants are used to support a complete arch of replacement teeth. The exact number and position of implants depends on your anatomy, bone availability, and treatment needs.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
The implant itself sits beneath the gum and acts as the foundation. The visible crown, bridge, or denture is designed to resemble natural teeth and coordinate with your smile.
-
Sometimes. Immediate implant placement is possible in certain cases, but factors including bone condition, infection, implant stability, and the location of the tooth determine whether it is appropriate.
-
Yes. Implants can be used to retain or support dentures and provide greater stability than a conventional denture resting only on the gums.
-
Coverage varies by insurance plan and the reason for treatment. Our team can review the benefits information available to you, but coverage should not be assumed until your benefits are verified.
-
Treatment time varies. After implant placement, the jawbone often needs time to integrate with the implant before the final restoration is attached. This process can take several months, although treatment schedules vary considerably by patient.
-
You may not necessarily need one implant for every missing tooth. Implants can sometimes support a bridge or full-arch restoration that replaces multiple teeth.
-
Yes. Dental implants and the restorations attached to them still require daily cleaning and professional maintenance. Regular dental visits allow the dentist to monitor the implant, gums, bite, and restoration.
