What to Expect During Your Professional Teeth Whitening Appointment

Thinking about getting your teeth professionally whitened? You're in good hands. iDental offers In-office whitening that is one of the fastest, most effective ways to brighten your smile and the process is much more comfortable than most people expect. Here's exactly what happens, step by step.

Before we begin: your pre-treatment evaluation

Every whitening treatment starts with a conversation. Our dentist will review your oral health, check for any cavities or gum issues (these need to be addressed before whitening), and take a look at your current shade. If you've recently had a professional cleaning, great. If not, a quick polish may be done to remove surface buildup so the whitening gel can work as evenly as possible.

Your starting shade is recorded using a shade guide, a small color reference that maps where your teeth fall on the spectrum from darkest to lightest. This matters more than you might think: once patients see their results, they often forget how dark their teeth were to begin with. Having a documented starting point gives you something real to compare against afterward.

Step-by-step: what happens during the appointment

Lip protection is applied

Our dentist or hygienist will gently coat your lips with a vitamin E oil. This protects them from the retractors that hold your cheeks and lips out of the way during treatment and doubles as a moisturizer you can take home afterward.

Retractors are placed

A soft, flexible retractor is gently inserted to keep your lips, cheeks, and tongue away from your teeth. It sounds more dramatic than it feels, most patients find it comfortable, and you can even bite down lightly to hold it in place. Both upper and lower teeth are exposed so both arches can be treated at the same time.

Your gums are protected with a liquid barrier

This is the step that makes all the difference. A light-cured liquid dam, a gel-like material, is carefully painted along your gumline and between your teeth. It hardens under a small curing light, creating a protective seal that keeps the whitening gel off your gum tissue. Your dentist takes their time here; thorough coverage means no post-appointment gum soreness.

The whitening gel is mixed and applied

Professional-grade whitening gel uses a higher concentration of hydrogen peroxide than anything available over the counter, typically around 38%. The gel comes in two separate components that are mixed together right before use, then applied directly to your teeth with a small tip. It has a slightly foamy texture that clings to the teeth and doesn't run.

You relax for 15-minute sessions

Once the gel is applied, you simply wait about 15 minutes per session. Your dentist or assistant stays in the room the whole time. If you feel any tingling or burning, let them know immediately by raising your hand. Most patients experience nothing at all. Bring headphones or ask if there's a TV; it passes quickly.

The gel is suctioned off and reapplied

After 15 minutes, the gel is carefully suctioned away (without water, to prevent splashing) and a fresh application is placed. Depending on how your teeth are responding and how much time you have, this is typically repeated 2 to 4 times. The more comfortable you are, the more sessions you can do in a single visit.

The gum barrier is removed and your new shade is revealed

The liquid dam peels away cleanly in one piece. Your teeth are rinsed, the retractor comes out, and you get to see your results. Your dentist will photograph the after shade alongside your before photo so you can see the full difference side by side.

After your appointment: what to expect

Some sensitivity is normal

Mild sensitivity in the first 24–48 hours is common, especially to temperature. It typically fades quickly on its own.

Temporary white spots may appear

Any existing decalcification marks may look more prominent right after whitening. These usually blend in within a day or two.

Home trays extend your results

Most patients follow up with custom take-home trays using a lower-concentration gel (typically 16–22%) worn for 7–14 nights.

Watch what you eat and drink

For the first 24–48 hours, avoid staining foods and beverages like coffee, red wine, and dark sauces while enamel is most porous.

Frequently asked questions

  • Plan for about an hour to an hour and a half. Prep and application take some time, and ideally you'll complete 2–4 rounds of gel while you're there.

  • Most patients don't experience any discomfort during treatment at all. Your provider monitors you closely throughout, and if anything feels off, the gel can be removed right away. If you have a history of sensitivity, mention it beforehand there are steps we can take to minimize it.

  • Results vary. Factors like your natural tooth color, the porosity of your enamel, and your starting shade all play a role. Your dentist can give you a realistic expectation during your evaluation but most patients see a noticeable improvement even after a single session.

  • No, but it's strongly recommended. A clean tooth surface allows the whitening gel to work more evenly and effectively. If you haven't had a recent cleaning, your provider may do a quick polish before starting.

  • Dental restorations don't respond to whitening gels the same way natural tooth enamel does. That said, whitening the surrounding natural teeth can still improve the overall look of your smile. Our dentist will discuss what's possible in your specific case.

  • It depends on your lifestyle and diet. With good oral hygiene and periodic touch-ups using your custom trays, results can last a year or longer. Annual in-office treatments are popular for maintaining brightness.
