Questions We Hear Every Week (And Quick Answers)

If you have ever thought, “I should probably ask my dentist about this…” you are not alone. These are some of the most common questions we hear every week at iDental, with quick, straightforward answers to help you feel more confident about your oral health.

1) “Do I really need a cleaning if my teeth feel fine?”

Usually, yes. Plaque can harden into tartar (calculus) in areas you cannot reach well at home, even if nothing hurts. A professional cleaning removes buildup, helps prevent gum disease, and lets us catch small issues early.

2) “Is bleeding when I floss normal?”

A little bleeding can happen if you have not been flossing consistently, but it should improve within 1 to 2 weeks of daily flossing. If it keeps happening, it often points to gum inflammation and is worth checking.

Tip: Start gently, and be consistent. Healthy gums usually do not bleed. Read our post about “Why Do My Gums Bleed When I Brush?

3) “How often should I replace my toothbrush?”

Every 3 months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed. Also replace it after a cold, flu, or other illness if you want to be extra cautious.

4) “Is electric toothbrush really better?”

For many people, yes. Electric brushes can make it easier to clean thoroughly, especially along the gumline. The biggest advantage is consistency. If you brush well with a manual brush, that can still work too.

5) “Why are my teeth sensitive to cold?”

Common reasons include mild enamel wear, gum recession, recent whitening, grinding, or a small cavity. Sensitivity is not always serious, but it is a useful signal.

If it is sharp, getting worse, or happening in one specific tooth, schedule an exam.

6) “What is the best toothpaste?”

It depends on your goals, but a fluoride toothpaste is a solid default for most people. If you have sensitivity, look for a sensitivity formula. If you are prone to cavities, we may recommend a higher fluoride option.

If you are unsure, ask us at your next visit and we will match it to your needs.

7) “Can I whiten my teeth if I have crowns or fillings?”

You can whiten your natural teeth, but whitening does not change the color of crowns, veneers, or fillings. That means your natural teeth may brighten while older dental work stays the same shade.

Best approach: whiten first, then color match any cosmetic work after.

8) “Is coffee ruining my teeth?”

Coffee can stain, but it is not an automatic disaster. The biggest help is simple habits:

  • Drink water after coffee

  • Avoid sipping slowly for hours

  • Brush later (wait about 30 minutes if you had something acidic)

  • Keep up with cleanings

9) “Do I need mouthwash?”

Not always. Mouthwash can be helpful, but it is not a replacement for brushing and flossing. If you use it, choose one that fits your needs. Many people do well with alcohol free fluoride mouthwash, especially if they are cavity prone.

10) “What should I do if I have a dental emergency?”

If you have pain, swelling, a broken tooth, or trauma, call us. Until you are seen:

  • Rinse gently with warm salt water

  • Use a cold compress for swelling

  • Take over the counter pain relief if you can safely take it

  • Do not place aspirin directly on gums or teeth

If swelling is affecting breathing or swallowing, treat it as urgent and seek emergency care immediately.

When should you stop guessing and just come in?

Reach out if you have:

  • Sensitivity that is worsening

  • A toothache that does not go away

  • Bleeding gums that persist after 1 to 2 weeks of consistent flossing

  • Swelling, a bump on the gums, or a bad taste that keeps returning

  • A chipped or cracked tooth
